George Eustice MPCamborne, Redruth & Hayle
George Eustice was born and brought up in Cornwall. The Eustice family have lived and worked in the Camborne and Redruth area for over four hundred years, first working in the mining and engineering industry and then later farming at Gwinear where they have lived for the past 150 years.
George went to Truro Cathedral School and Truro School when growing up and, on leaving school, attended Cornwall College at Pool. He was a member of Cornwall Athletic Club based at Carn Brea and ran for the county cross-country team for many years and still runs regularly to keep fit.
He has nine years political campaign experience, first for the anti-euro 'No Campaign' as its Campaign Director between 1999 and 2003 and then as Head of Press under Michael Howard between 2003 and the 2005 General Election. He was David Cameron's Press Secretary from June 2005 until the end of 2007and was part of his campaign team during the leadership contest.
Before entering politics, he worked for nine years in the family business, Trevaskis Fruit Farm near Connor Downs. His parents and brother still own and manage the business, which consists of a farm shop providing quality local produce and a popular restaurant offering quality food produced on the farm. The farm also runs many school visits to educate local primary school children about food and the farming industry, with around 3000 children visiting the farm each year. The family has a small herd of South Devon cattle and also the country's oldest herd of British Lop pigs – a rare breed native to Cornwall.
He has championed economic regeneration in Cornwall and is active in the no campaign against the adoption of the Alternative Vote system. He is also a member of the Environment and Rural Affairs Select Committee and has presented a Private Members Bill which would give new protection to borrowers who offer lenders a security interest over their assets.
George has a girlfriend, Katy.
