 | Conservatives plan retail regeneration summit |
 |
Local Conservatives have announced plans to hold a Retail Summit in Camborne and Redruth early next year to investigate ways to regenerate town centres and create new wealth and job opportunities.
The move follows the successful Marine Energy Summit held in July at the Tremough Campus which attracted over 60 industry experts from as far afield as Scotland. At that event, Greg Clark, the Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change announced plans to create a new marine energy park in Cornwall to develop wave power.
George Eustice, the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle is organising the retail summit and has already had initial conversations with leading retail experts such as the Chief Executive of Next plc. He hopes that the summit will provoke discussion about the future of towns like Camborne and Redruth.
Speaking after a meeting with the Camborne Chamber of Commerce to discuss the town's future, George Eustice, the Conservative candidate for Camborne, Redruth and Hayle said:
"My grandfather was a Director of the Tyacks Group which used to run the department store on Church Street on the site that is now an Aldi car park. You can’t turn the clock back but we do need to work out the best way forward for our towns.”
"Why is it that major retailers choose sites out of town? Can the trend be reversed? And if not, then what is the potential for developing other leisure activities and entertainment to create a new focus for our town centres?
"This summit will aim to get some of the leading experts in the country engaged in answering these questions."
